Everyone comes to the Agadir coast for the surf. But just north of Taghazout, near the village of Tamri, there is a different kind of wave: the Timlalin dunes. Big, soft, golden slopes with the ocean behind them — one of the best places in Morocco to try sandboarding, whether you have never stood on a board or you surf every morning.

What is sandboarding?
Sandboarding is like snowboarding or surfing, but on sand. You slide down a dune on a board, then walk back up — there are no lifts in the desert. Sand is slower than snow, which makes it a gentle place to learn, and falling on soft sand hurts much less than falling on snow or a reef.
Why the Timlalin dunes are special
- Dunes meet the ocean. Most Moroccan dunes are deep in the Sahara, days from the coast. Here you ride with an Atlantic view.
- Slopes for every level. Small gentle runs for children and first-timers, long steep faces for those who want speed.
- Soft, clean sand shaped by the ocean wind.
- Easy to combine with a camel ride, a quad tour, tea by the fire or a night in a fisherman’s cabin.

Beginner tips from our guides
- Start small. Take your first runs on a short, gentle slope to feel how the board moves.
- Sit before you stand. Riding sitting down or lying on your stomach is fun and the fastest way to build confidence.
- Lean back slightly and keep your weight on your back foot so the nose of the board doesn’t dig in.
- Look where you want to go, not at your feet — just like surfing.
- Walk up on the hard edge of the dune, not in the soft middle. It saves a lot of energy.
- Stop before you’re exhausted. Climbing dunes is a real workout; the last run should be a good one.

What to wear and bring
- Light clothes you don’t mind getting sandy; long trousers protect against the hot sand in summer
- Sunglasses — they also keep sand out of your eyes
- Sunscreen, water and a hat
- A warm layer for after sunset
- A zip bag for your phone
Is it safe?
Yes, with common sense. Our guides choose the slopes for your level and stay with you the whole time. Avoid riding head-first down steep faces, keep a distance from other riders, and don’t ride in the hottest midday hours in summer. Children are welcome with an adult — tell us their ages when you book.
Make it a full afternoon
Sandboarding is short and intense — most guests combine it with something slower:
- Sunset camel ride to a viewpoint over the ocean (€20)
- Quad tour through dunes and canyons (€30)
- The Timlalin desert adventure: quad, camel, sandboarding, desert tea and a meal by the fire, morning, afternoon, golden hour or night (€90)
- Or stay the night in Ajarif, our award-winning fisherman’s cabin, and ride again at sunrise.
